I have a few policies that I stick to when I’m out on an adventure like this. One is to wash my hands, every opportunity that I have. Running all day, my hands get slimy with sweat, sticky with Gatorade, and covered in road debris kicked up by passing traffic. Afterwards, I’m really not any cleaner on the whole, but it makes me feel just a little better.
Another is to stop, at every bridge I come to – no matter how small – and look down. Regardless of how well I’m moving at the time, whatever the pace, I stop. And I’m almost always glad that I took that moment to appreciate what everyone around me is zooming past at 55 mph.
Today was a struggle most of the day. I’m pretty beat up from my time on the road yesterday; lack of training will do that. Nearly the entire day I ran straight into a chilly head wind, under overcast skies. I never really got warm.
But now the day has come to an end, and I’m in Cadillac. I finished today’s episode sharing the dinner table with a dear friend who just happened to be in the area on business. Despite how I felt, I surprised myself with the amount of ground that I covered in the time that it took me. And above all, I had the chance to see a little more of the world. Today was a good day.
